Hydrosols (also known as floral waters or distillates) are a by-product of the process used to make essential oils. Hydrosols contain the essence of a plant in every drop, just like essential oils, but in a milder form. They are suitable for applications where essential oils would be too strong. Unlike essential oils that should be deluted prior to application to the skin, hydrosols are water soluble and can be used directly on the skin without further dilution.
Hydrosols make excellent facial toners, body sprays, air fresheners and linen sprays.
Neroli, Rose and Roman Chamomile may be taken internally (more information in each product description). Typically, one would use 2 tablespoons of hydrosol added to one liter of water per day. Drink this mixture throughout the day for several weeks.
KK Ayurveda’s hydrosols are of the highest quality available. There are many so-called floral waters and distillates on the market that are not true hydrosols and thus do not have the healing potency of the real thing. These hydrosols contain no preservatives.
Roman Chamomile is known for its calming, almost sedative qualities. It calms the nervous system and aids in stress reduction, depression, insomnia and irritability. This hydrosol works as well on children as it does on adults. A spritz of Roman Chamomile Hydrosol in the air can create a calmer, more mellow environment.
Skin-Care Uses: Chamomile calms rashes, sensitivities, rosacea, acne, heat rash and redness. It soothes dry, flaky, itchy skin and eczema. Can be used on burns and sunburns.
Use as a toner for delicate, red, sensitive skin. Spray on the face daily after cleansing. May be used more frequently on burns, rashes, irritated skin and eczema. Because it is astringent, Roman Chamomile Hydrosol should not be used long-term on dry skin. May be combined with Neroli Hydrosol for oily skin or acne. Combine it with Lavender Hydrosol for dry or normal skin.
Eyes: Roman Chamomile is safe to use directly in the eyes. Use it as a daily eyewash to ward off the effects of pollution, computer use and redness. Use as a compress for conjunctivitis.
Migraines: A compress of Roman Chamomile Hydrosol gently eases a migraine.
Stress Reduction: Roman Chamomile Hydrosol may be added to drinking water in times of stress and irritability. Add 2 tablespoons to a liter of water and drink throughout the day. Roman Chamomile tastes mildly sweet and faintly of apples.
Insomnia: Add to warm water and drink as a tea before bed to induce restful sleep. May also be added to a warm bath before bed.
Babies and Children: Roman Chamomile Hydrosol can be used safely on all children, including newborns. Use in their bathwater and as a calming spray on bed linens. Dab on diaper rash (use alone or add an equal amount of Lavender Hydrosol). Calms diarrhea and stomach upset associated with teething when added to a bottle of water (add 2 or 3 drops of Hydrosol). Rub a baby’s gums with Roman Chamomile Hydrosol to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain.
Pets: Add Roman Chamomile to your pet’s drinking water to reduce stress before travel, a trip to the vet or during a storm.
Lavender is, above all, a balancer. It balances the dryness/oiliness of skin, reduces tension, settles emotions, calms and uplifts. It’s a wonderful all-around hydrosol. Lavender Hydrosol relieves tension, depression, panic, hysteria and nervous exhaustion. It’s also effective for headaches, migraines and insomnia. Lavender Hydrosol can be used internally but it doesn’t taste so good. Use Roman Chamomile instead. It has many of the same properties as lavender plus a pleasant taste.
Skin-Care Uses: Lavender Hydrosol is gentle and balancing for all skin types. It cools summer's heat, soothes sunburns, heals irritations, gently tones all skin types and cleanses gently and safely.
Lavender is recommended for normal, fragile or damaged skin. It has strong regenerative capacities. Spray on skin daily after cleansing. Lavender Hydrosol helps ease the pain of sunburn and counters the itching effect of insect bites. Spray skin both before and after hair removal or shaving to reduce inflammation and prevent ingrown hairs.
Stress Reduction: Use as a compress on shoulders, neck and forehead for headaches, tension and stress. Calms crankiness and irritability whan added to bathwater or sprayed on bed linens. Babies and Children: Use Lavender Hydrosol to cleanse cuts and scrapes. Like Roman Chamomile Hydrosol, Lavender Hydrosol is safe to use on infants—in bathwater, as a baby wipe or on diaper rash.
This is my favorite hydrosol—internally and externally. It’s floral, fruity, refreshing and delicious. Use as a skin toner, a room spray, a linen spray, a beverage (2 tablespoons added to 1 liter of water) or all of the above! Neroli is a major anti-stress and calming agent. It’s mildly sedative to the nervous system without causing sleepiness. It calms jitters if you’ve had too much caffeine. It can relieve chronic anxiety, depression, fear, shock and stress. Its calming effect can also be beneficial to the digestive tract. It's milder than Rose Hydrosol when working on affairs of the heart, self-love and nurturing.
Skin-Care Uses: Use daily after cleansing as a toner for oily or delicate skin. Can be combined with Lavender Hydrosol or Rose Hydrosol for dry or normal skin.
Addiction Support: Neroli Hydrosol supports the physical and emotional bodies during detoxification or when quitting a habit/addiction like smoking or drinking. Digestive Upsets: Neroli Hydrosol relieves heartburn and acid reflux when taken internally. It also calms spasms in the digestive tract so it’s useful in cases of irritable bowel syndrome. Mist on the abdomen for stress-related bloating, gas, cramps and constipation.
Depression: Drink water with Neroli Hydrosol added to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder, chronic depression, stress or emotional upsets.
Babies and Children: Stressed-out babies, kids and grown ups can all use a bit of Neroli Hydrosol added to their drinking water. This may also help children with ADHD. Spray bedding and/or clothing to induce calm.
Rose (Rosa damascena) Hydrosol $16.50 (4 oz., plastic sprayer)
Smells and tastes just like a rose: delicate, ethereal and floral. Rose Hydrosol has an affinity to the heart physically (poor circulation, palpitations, arrhythmia and high blood pressure), emotionally (depression, grief, anger and fear) and energetically/psychologically (sexuality, self-nurturing and self esteem). It’s one of the most widely used remedies for female hormonal issues. It’s also a good tonic for the liver and gallbladder.
Skin-Care Uses: Rose adds and retains moisture. This Hydrosol is suitable for normal, dry, mature, sensitive and devitalized skin. Use daily after cleansing. It also balances and restores the skin's pH and helps refine pores. Female Hormone Balance: Rose Hydrosol has a clearing, cleansing, regulating and purifying effect on the female sex organs. It cools hot flashes and calms PMS irritability and moodiness. It regulates and balances hormones, irregular menstruation and uterine disorders, while having a general toning effect on the uterus. Used internally (2 tablespoons in 1 liter of water), Rose Hydrosol is a hormone balancer for all ages.
Fragrance: Use as a body spray or room scent if sensitive to chemicals and environmental toxins.
