KK Ayurveda's Bug Spray was first formulated for a trip to India and the desire to avoid powerful chemicals that repel malaria-carrying mosquitoes. It smelled good, in that herbal-spa sense, which made me actually enjoy spraying it on my clothes, on my skin and in my hair each day before touring.
That formula has now been altered to repel fleas and ticks too which makes it a nice alternative to commercial flea and tick products that can be harmful to some dogs. My dog, Ruby, weighed only 3 lbs. when I got her and I feel better using my own natural, insect repellent reformulated with a few tweaks.
Bug Spray for Dogs & Humans is a combination of essential oils used for centuries for many purposes, including avoidance of bug bites, in a distilled-water base. There are no preservatives or other additives which is why you need to shake it well before every application. Peppermint, eucalyptus, lemongrass and lavender repel mosquitoes. Cedarwood, eucalyptus, lemongrass and lavender repel fleas. Rose geranium repels ticks. Bugs are turned off by the scents of these oils and will head for other smells they enjoy. Let them go bite someone else!
(Ruby is a city dog who doesn't spend much time outdoors in plants or wooded areas. Bug Spray for Dogs & Humans was formuated for her so no claims can be made for "outdoor" dogs or dogs who go camping and do other outside-in-nature activities. I spray it on each of us before we go out for walks.)
Before leaving your house, shake Bug Spray well and mist it along your dog's spine and on the collar or harness. Avoid eyes, nose and mouth. The same goes for yourself. A little goes a long way so you and your pet don't need to be doused in the stuff. Dog bedding can be sprayed as well.
Caution: While all of these essential oils are considered safe for dogs and humans, as with all substances, they can sometimes cause a reaction. Discontinue use if you or your pet react in any way that concerns you. Rinse yourself or your pet with milk before shampooing. This sounds weird but essential oils are not water soluble and the fat in milk will remove them more effectively than shampoo or soap. Contact your doctor or vet if the problem persists.
